FAQs
Will this interface work on my computer?
Yes, as long as your computer has a communications port that utilizes a DB9 and a standard
sound card with standard 1/8-inch jacks. The interface is designed to accommodate most
sound cards. If you have a USB connection only, there are products you can buy to
convert a USB port to a DB9. Some who have done this have reported success.
*Sorry, Mac users. This won't work for you.
Will it work on any Phoenix SX radio?
The interface should work on any working Phoenix SX radio. Newer
radios had minor mic pin out differences that may require swapping a couple of wires on
the mic plug but are still easily compatible. Note: Some
radios have maintenance and modification histories that may cause incompatibilities.
This interface can't account for these rare anonomolies, but as a rule of thumb, if
your radio produces audio and it transmits when a mic is connected to it, then this
interface does the trick.
How do I hook this thing up?
Check the "Quick Installation Guide" section of this website for the
installation instructions. Its easy. Some support is offered via e-mail and
there is a Tech Support web page. The goal is to get you one the air quickly and
painlessly so that you can enjoy EchoLink upon receiving your interface.
Do I need a Mic and that Switchhook Mic
holder thingy?
Absolutely not. Just a working radio. The mic and switch hook are not
necessary to make the interface work.
Do I need a power cable?
No. That's included with the interface but you will need your own 12 volt power
supply and computer.
I'm not completely familiar with the
Phoenix SX radio. Are there any radio settings I need to know about?
Well, the more you know about the radio, the better, right? Go to the "GE
Phoenix Radio Settings" link to view a pictorial guide that points you to the
important adjustments. The two you may want to familiarize yourself with are the
location of the SQUELCH and DEVIATION. The deviation usually needs to be increased
slightly. Be careful when adjusting power output settings and don't exceed the
maximum rated output for this radio.
This site is not designed to guide you through all of the "ins and
outs" of the Phoenix SX radio, but the links provided in the "GE Phoenix Radio
Info" section of this site offer good resources to get you started.
What if it doesn't work?
Unlike many sellers on the net, I don't hide behind the phrase "as is".
I don't want you to be stuck with an item that doesn't work. There's nothing
more frustrating. If for some reason this interface doesn't work after proper
installation and settings, e-mail me at "blackboxinterface @ yahoo.com" so I can
attempt to assist you. Any problems you encounter will most likely be unrelated to
your interface. Most are usually simple setting issues, an unrelated problem with
your radio, or PC issues. If troubleshooting is unsuccessful, simply return the item for a refund
of the purchase price.
Thank you for choosing the Little Black Box interface and keeping
the GE Phoenix SX radio alive!
